New Haven, CT (Law Firm Newswire) March 29, 2011 – Sexual abuse is a life-altering personal injury and loss. Lawsuits involving George Reardon and at least 135 plaintiffs that suffered as his patients at the St. Francis Hospital are far-reaching and devastating. Reardon passed away in 1998, but when a homeowner was renovating Reardon’s former residence in 2007, a collection of more than 50,000 pornographic slides and 100 movie reels showing his child and adolescent patients were found.

Reardon was the hospital’s former chief of endocrinology. The victims of his sexual abuse say that the hospital was negligent when it did nothing to stop the abuse. An estimated 500 children were abused, sometimes up to 50 times during office visits. But the hospital claims they were not aware of these incidents until state health officials attempted to revoke his license in 1993.

“State policies typically protect a child’s identity in sex abuse cases,” said Joel T. Faxon, a Connecticut personal injury attorney who is representing 70 of the plaintiffs.

The hospital and medical center in Hartford recently filed a motion to mandate that the plaintiff’s names be revealed in court documents and at trial. They feel their rights to voir dire are being compromised.

“There are ways to protect the identity of these plaintiffs and still give all parties a fair trial,” said Faxon, who has more than a decade of experience with sexual abuse and personal injury cases. “The victims’ names do not need to be publicly disclosed and have them go through more trauma.”

The plaintiffs will never fully recover from these abuses, but they hope to gain from the losses due to medical costs, pain and suffering and emotional distress. They also want to show big medical centers and businesses that they cannot hide or brush off employees who violate normal behavior and ethical standards.
