New Haven, CT (Law Firm Newswire) August 3, 2011 – The Stratton Faxon Fairfield Road Race was a huge success in late June and attracted so many participants that it extended to two days for the first time. More than 6,000 runners participated from 10 countries and 34 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Runners consider the event one of the best road races in New England and took part in the 5k race on Saturday and half marathon on Sunday. Top runners from Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, Turkey, and the U.S. vied for the first place award and prize money.

“We’re thrilled at the response from the running community and the long term growth of the event,” said Race Director Steve Lobdell. “In 1981 our inaugural race had 200 runners; we couldn’t have dreamed the race would grow to over 6,000 runners and sell out a month before the event.”

Kumsa Adugna of Ethiopia won first place in the half marathon with a time of 1:04.40. It was his first Fairfield Half Marathon. Ketema Nigusse and two-time winner Worku Beyi came in after Adugna. The best local runner, Lucas Meyer of Ridgefield, came in fifth place at 1:09.52. Moroccan Malika Mejdoub came in first in the female division at 1:18.06, and Turkey’s Tertza Dengersa finished second. Local Shannon McHale of West Simsbury finished fifth. McHale has gained a spot in the Olympic trials in 2012.

Both races are held on Fairfield’s Jennings Beach and include bands along the courses and a post-race beach party. The title sponsor, Stratton Faxon Law Firm, has participated in the race since 2007. These road races raise a lot of money for charity. This year’s lead charity is The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. The camp in Ashford, Connecticut serves children with cancer and other critical illnesses. The camp’s programs reach out to 17,500 individuals each year between their free summer camps, and visits to hospitals and clinics.

“We are proud to sponsor the Fairfield races and run along such a high caliber of athletes,” said Connecticut personal injury attorney Michael Stratton, a partner at Stratton Faxon. “The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp has been giving ill children and their families a place to enjoy and be themselves since 1988.”

With every winning case that the firm has, Stratton Faxon sets aside 10 percent of its fee to charitable causes. Monies go to community events such as the Fairfield Race, a client’s nominated charity, and groups that support the civil justice system. The law firm continually champions their clients’ rights and earned the designation of being one of The Best Lawyers in America this year.
