New Haven, CT (Law Firm Newswire) October 5, 2011 – The 34th annual Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race attracted an estimated 7,000 runners and thousands of dollars for charities. The lively race on Labor Day challenged the big field of runners who participated in the 5K, 20K, and the kids’ half mile races. One group set a record of raising $14,000 and three U.S. Olympians even participated in the race.

“It was really impressive to see the record-breaking field of runners and hear all the stories of why people ran,” said Connecticut personal injury attorney Michael Stratton, a partner at Stratton Faxon that sponsors the race. “People were running in honor of their loved ones and so many charitable causes.” Stratton and his wife ran the 20K in support of the PKD Foundation.

The 20K race was won by Olympian Abdi Abdirahman, who crossed the finish line in one hour and 13 seconds. Janet Cherobon-Bawci was the first woman to finish in one hour, eight minutes and 12 seconds. She also recently became a U.S. citizen after moving from Kenya. The 20K run is the USA 20K Championship race for men and women. Muad Hrezi from Naugatuck won the 5K in 16 minutes and seven seconds. New Haven residents Laura Rosado won the kids’ half mile in two minutes and 56 seconds, and Edgar Diaz was right behind her in two minutes and 59 seconds.

The race had a new route this year and was cleaned up just in time after Hurricane Irene caused some trees to fall on the route. Runners and their onlookers got to enjoy many bands, food, and post-race activities on the holiday. The main charities included the B+ Foundation for Children with Cancer, the Cindy Lynn Sherwin Memorial Foundation, and the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Foundation. More than 20 other charities were also given donations too. The road race is a non-profit group and has raised more than $300,000 in donations for local charities.
