Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) June 14, 2012 – A new program designed to retrain almost 100,000 veterans for the American workforce launches this month.

The Veteran Retraining Assistance Program is a joint venture between the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is a part of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act. VOW stands for Veterans Opportunity to Work.

“This ought to be a fantastic opportunity for veterans to get some more education so that they can get higher-paying jobs,” said Tampa veterans disability lawyer David Magann. “This opportunity will be able to help disabled vets, as well.” The program is available to veterans between the ages of 35 and 60. They are able to apply for education costs for up to a year.

The VRAP opens the door for veterans who qualify to land up to one year of help that is equal to the active duty rate for the GI Bill. That rate is about $1,500 now. “Especially in the case of veterans who have been hurt during battle, this opportunity needs to be seized,” Magann said. “Many veterans come home from battle frustrated that war wounds – both physical and emotional make it difficult to return to the same line of work they were in before they deployed. Programs like this are critical for those injured veterans who need and want to excel in the workforce.”

In order to get the benefits, the veteran needs to meet the qualifications below.
• The vet cannot be getting VA compensation at 100 percent because of individual un-employability.
• The vet cannot be within 180 days of another federal or state job training program.
• The vet cannot be eligible for other VA training benefit programs.
• The VA-approved training must begin after July 1, 2012
• The vet must be between the ages of 35 and 60 and must be unemployed and NOT dishonorably discharged.

Magann is a Marine Corps Veteran who earned his law degree at the University of Miami. He also has a criminology degree from the University of South Florida.
