Teacher Raped 14-Year-Old, Who Then Committed Suicide
Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) October 4, 2012 – A 14-year-old girl was repeatedly sexually assaulted by her 48-year-old teacher.
“This was one of those cases where you shake your head and wonder what on earth possesses people,” said Bobby Lee, an Austin personal injury attorney of Lee, Gober and Reyna in Austin, Texas. “It involves one of the worst breaches of trust anyone could perpetuate – the abuse of a young teen by a teacher.” The young girl committed suicide just three weeks before her 17th birthday. The man was ultimately charged with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent.
Allegedly distraught and depressed, the young girl had confided the assaults to her church group leader, divulging details of three separate incidents. The leader called her mother and the police. The teacher was put on paid leave once the police investigation was launched, later resigning his teaching certificate. After the suicide, the girl’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which ended up being settled out of court.
The lawsuit listed six causes of action, sexual assault and battery, wrongful death, negligence, negligent infliction of emotional distress and survivorship. It also sought damages for their daughter’s mental pain and anguish, the family’s overwhelming grief, medical expenses for her treatments for depression, loss of companionship, funeral and burial expenses.
The suit further asked for punitive damages, stating that the man acted with malice toward their daughter. “The out of court settlement details were not released to the public, but one glaring fact still haunts the family – their daughter would still be alive but for her teacher raping her,” Lee added.
Wrongful death lawsuits are never easy for the victim’s family. This case was no exception. The only hope that kept the family going was making sure the teacher never raped anyone else.

- Nodding off behind the wheel of a vehicle is often the cause of big rig accidents
Eighteen-wheeler accidents happen every day and cost thousands of lives. Many of them are the result of driver fatigue – or are they? There is an interesting report out by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) which shows that may not always be the case. Even though the motoring public perceives trucker fatigue as being the cause of collisions, a recent study shows that on average, four-wheel drivers are more fatigued than commercial truckers. The study also suggests that the vast majority of big rig accidents happen because of poor decisions made by four-wheel drivers, such as tailgating, stopping [...]
- Spring brings warmer weather and inspires motorcycle riders to hit the roads
And when they hit the road, safety becomes a major issue — not just for the biker, but for everyone on the road. These days, motorcycle riders are concerned about the increased number of distracted driving on the roads. Bikers already must deal with drivers not seeing them or performing abrupt turns right in front of them. Driving while texting or talking on a cellphone only increases the chances of a motorcycle crash. If you’re driving around motorcycles, remember to provide them with a full lane of travel, stay at least four clear seconds behind them, pay attention and assume [...]
- Distracted driving statistics are chilling
As the number of mobile devices designed for use in a moving vehicle increases, so do deaths related to their use. A recently released report showed that Americans, as a nation, talk, text and drive much more than Europeans. This is not a contest. However, it does show that texting, talking and webbing are serious issues worldwide. It’s not much to be proud of when you then look at the number of deaths caused by this behavior. As chilling as this may be, technology is nice to stay in touch, but if you’re doing that while you’re driving and it [...]
