Transvaginal Mesh Implants Were Intended to Help Women but they Failed Miserably

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) October 30, 2012 – The idea behind a transvaginal mesh implant is a good one. However, it does not appear to be working.

In many instances, but not all, pregnancy results in pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence. With pelvic prolapse, the pelvis protrudes into the vaginal wall, shifting other organs, and in some cases, sticking out of the body. Urinary incontinence happens when urine is released by physical activity, sneezing, laughing or coughing. When news of the mesh implants started making the rounds, women found the idea appealing, as it was intended to keep everything in place inside their bodies, protect them and keep them safe.

“The reality is the implants are the cause of serious medical issues, worse than the mesh was supposed to help treat. They are considered to be a defective medical product, and the company that made them has the responsibility to own up to their mistakes. They are liable to millions of women for the pain, discomfort and subsequent surgeries to correct what went wrong with the implant,” Austin personal injury attorney Lee stated.

When dealing with a defective product, the plaintiff does not need to show that the manufacturer was negligent. They only need to show the product harmed them, even if it was used as intended. If the company did not warn potential users about possible side effects and dangers, the plaintiff also has a good case to take to court.

Documented side effects of the mesh implantation include, but are not limited to the mesh extruding out of the body, perforated or punctured bladders, bleeding, vaginal scarring, vaginal pain, pain during sex, erosion of the mesh through vaginal tissues and draining/discharge from the vagina. With the wide range of side effects and other medical issues cropping up, it became necessary for women to have further surgeries to attempt to remedy the problem.
