Sarasota School Playground Becomes Scene of Police Pursuit
Lakeland, FL (Law Firm Newswire) November 21, 2012 – A man recently led Sarasota police on two separate car chases, including one through a school playground.
He is also alleged to have battered two people that same day.
“Criminals frequently display erratic and dangerous behavior when cornered by police,” Polk County criminal defense lawyer Thomas Grajek commented. “They can feel like they have nothing left to lose.”
At about 3:30 on a recent Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies tried to pull over a gray Chevrolet Malibu for exceeding the speed limit. The driver fled at high speed, and drove across the playground of Brentwood Elementary School. Deputies decided to call off the chase for the sake of public safety. The car was traced to 31-year-old John Kaafi, who matched the man’s description. A few hours later, deputies responded to a report of a battery at Kaafi’s Sarasota home, but he had left the scene by the time they arrived.
Around 3:30 a.m. the following morning, Kaafi’s child’s mother called police, saying he had come to her home and attacked her following a fight. She also said that he was under the influence of crack cocaine. An hour later, a patrol car spotted Kaafi’s gray Chevrolet speeding on a city street and attempted to pull him over. Kaafi again fled the police at high speed, endangering others on the road.
Deputies at that point felt they had to abandon the chase again. But then Kaafi turned down a dead end road, ditched the car, and fled on foot. Police then set up a perimeter around the area and called out helicopter and K-9 units. Kaafi was soon found by the K-9 unit hiding in a wooded area.
Kaafi was charged with two counts of fleeing police, one count of burglary, and one count of attempted vehicle burglary after police discovered he attempted to break into a truck while on the run. He will likely face additional charges.

- Alleged Drunk Drivers May Now Apply On Their Own For A Hardship License In Florida
With a recent change in Florida law, DUI-arrested drunk drivers may apply for their own hardship license to allow them to get to work. Florida is deadly serious about not drinking and driving, and if caught, the driver gets an immediate license suspension. That is inconvenient for sure, but overall that is the least of an offender’s worries, should they be caught more than once. Being without a license means not having a way to get to work. Now, instead of hiring a criminal defense lawyer to help you obtain a hardship license, you may apply for one on your […]
- Florida legislature's attempt to repeal "Stand Your Ground" Law fails.
This week, the legislature’s latest attempt to repeal Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law failed. This means that a person does not have a duty to retreat if attacked. The proposed bill was soundly defeated by a vote of 11-2. This law has been the subject of protests and media coverage ever since the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin trial. ”Stand Your Ground” received this coverage despite the fact that the Zimmerman trial was really a self-defense issue, not a stand your ground issue. The Stand Your Ground Defense allows a person arrested for a criminal charge to file a motion with the […]
- Dentist sentenced in DUI Manslaughter case from Halloween accident with two victims.
Yesterday, a Hillsborough county dentist was sentenced to 12 years in prison pursuant to a plea agreement with prosecutors for causing the deaths of two people in a horrible DUI Manslaughter accident during Halloween. The drivers blood alcohol level was 0.13 which is over the 0.08 legal limit. The case took 3 years to resolve by a plea to the charge. These cases can take a very long time to resolve due to the nature of the offense, the amount of evidence to thoroughly read, depositions, research case law, consult with experts, and file motions. DUI Manslaughter is a 2nd […]
