During the course of the investigation, police discovered what they presumed was a motive for the woman to commit suicide —- she had been the only person in the house a few days earlier when a 6-year-old child fell down a steep flight of stairs, sustaining massive internal injuries. He died several days later. The woman and her younger sister told police that neither of them had seen the boy fall.

The deceased woman’s family feels that the mother and father of the 6-year-old planned to take matters into their own hands and seek justice against someone they perceived to be responsible for the child’s fall. “The Sheriff’s department appears to be less than convinced that the woman was murdered, but does state they would reopen an investigation if there is new evidence presented in the case,” added Schuelke. In the hopes of prompting law enforcement to reopen the case, the dead woman’s family have hired forensic experts and attorneys to put pressure on the police.

Was this case a suicide or murder? That may remain a mystery until further evidence is found. In the meantime, the dead woman’s family may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit, despite the death possibly being a murder.
