Car Split In Half: Impact Kills Passenger Says Austin Injury Attorney Bobby Lee

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) January 31, 2014 – Recently, an allegedly drunk driver rammed into a tree, splitting the vehicle in half. The accident scene he left behind was brutally shocking.

“When a fast-moving object, like a car, is being driven by someone allegedly under the influence, chances are, something bad is going to happen. It did in this case. The drunk driver ran his vehicle into a tree, splitting it into two pieces and killing his passenger,” explained Austin DWI lawyer Bobby Lee of Lee, Gober & Reyna.

The Acura Integra slammed into a tree on a center freeway divide, propelling one half of the car across the divide and into the path of oncoming cars in the westbound lane. A Nissan Sentra collided with the half-vehicle. “The force of the impact was so dramatic that the 20-year-old female passenger was trapped in wreckage for over two hours while paramedics and fire personnel attempted to free her with the Jaws of Life. She was pronounced dead on extraction,” Lee detailed. The driver was forcefully ejected from the car, landing in the westbound lane. He was still conscious and able to breathe on his own when EMS crews reached him. He was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Eyewitnesses told police they had seen the car weaving in and out of traffic at high speeds just prior to the crash. Police arrest reports show that the driver will face DUI and manslaughter charges depending on the results of his blood tests.

“Drinking and driving is never a good idea. This case speaks for itself. But for the driver getting behind the wheel of his car while inebriated, a young woman would still be alive today. We represent plaintiffs involved in DUI cases. Our door is always open to you,” Lee stated.

  • Any traveler on the road risks an accident involving a truck
No one was able to explain why the cyclist was riding in the middle of Seven Mile Lane. A left turning pickup, coming off Hopper Road, hit him, dragging the elderly cyclist under the truck and into a ditch on the other side of the road. The truck and the cyclist came to an abrupt stop upon hitting a chain-link fence. When people hear about an accident involving a truck, most automatically think the collision involved two vehicles. That is not always the case.  The Harris County Sheriff’s report indicated that the elderly bicycle rider was hit by a pickup […]
  • Speed kills: slow down, you’re moving too fast
Not long ago, a horrific car crash killed six people at Highland Hills Drive and Bonnie View Road in Dallas. It was not that late at night – just ten minutes after nine. All six killed were traveling in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala that lost control while heading south on Bonnie View Road. Careening out of control, the car clipped a curb with a rear tire, hit the median on the other side of the road and slammed into a tree on the passenger’s side of the vehicle. Even though emergency response personnel arrived quickly, they had to call for […]
  • Respondeat superior may not apply for FedEx employees
The doctrine of respondeat superior typically applies wherever there is an employer/employee relationship.  However, it does not apply to FedEx Ground drivers. They are not considered employees, but are instead classified as independent contractors.  The company states that it does check its drivers before hiring them, but some bad apples still slip through the cracks. Consider the case of Gubani Quinteros of Tiris Trucking, who did not stop for stalled traffic and crashed his 25,000-pound box truck into a line of cars at 70 mph. Quinteros was a third-party contractor for a FedEx subsidiary. The accident totalled six vehicles, killed […]
  • 59 criminal charges land 23-year-old a 5-15 year jail sentence
Dennis Drue was 23 years old when his car hit another vehicle, killing two and injuring two. Before the crash, Drue’s driving record was sadly impressive. It reflected five license suspensions, four accidents and 22 traffic tickets. His charges after the December 2012 crash included DWI, aggravated vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter.  Drue turned left on to a thruway and ended two lives. The families of the victims chose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Dennis Drue, his mother (who let him drive her car even knowing his driving record), the steakhouse where he was drinking the night of the […]
  • Drive sober or get pulled over
The phrase was used for a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) drive safe campaign for the Labor Day weekend, but it is something drivers need to remember year-round. The costs of DUI accidents are massive on a personal and property damage level. A recent report released by the NHTSA outlines the disturbing fact that in 2010 alone, there were 13,323 fatalities as a result of individuals driving while impaired. Meanwhile, 430,000 nonfatal injuries racked up a cost of approximately $60 billion. Together, the comprehensive costs (direct costs such as insurance and medical care) and the cost of lost quality […]
