Traumatic Brain Injury Can Have Serious Effects on Adolescent Brains

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) October 28, 2014 – A new study indicates that when a young person suffers a traumatic brain injury, the future physical and psychological consequences can be severe.

According to the study, published in the journal Plos One, brain injuries can be the source of significant impairment, disability and years of life lost for adolescents. The study examined gender and age differences in the association between traumatic brain injury and harms to adolescents.

The study used data from a 2011 survey of 9,288 Canadian high school students. Researchers defined traumatic brain injury as a blow to the head that results in the loss of consciousness for five minutes or more and/or an overnight stay in the hospital. Overall, one in five adolescents reported a brain injury.

The study found that reports of brain injuries were more common among males, which is in line with previous studies. However, the researchers found that female adolescents who suffered traumatic brain injuries may be more likely to suffer adverse behavioral and psychological conditions than males with such injuries.

Earlier studies have also indicated that there are gender differences in the long-term effects of brain injury, with women experiencing more problems with emotional function, and men experiencing greater difficulty with cognitive function and memory.
