New Haven, CT (Law Firm Newswire) August 17, 2011 – Starting July 1, it is now the law that drivers must stop a minimum of 10 feet when a school bus is displaying its flashing red signal lights. The Connecticut law lets school boards and cities put cameras on buses to monitor for drivers who disobey the law. The first offense is a $450 fine, and a second offense or more can equal up a $1,000 fine, and possibly imprisonment.

“We support this law and how it will hopefully cut down on some of these tragic accidents,” said Connecticut personal injury attorney Joel Faxon.

Before the law was initiated, Connecticut was still experiencing accidents between buses and other vehicles. On June 16, a car struck a bus in Hartford, causing injuries to the driver of the auto and four children passengers. Headlines last year included a station wagon hitting a school bus on I-84 in Hartford, sending it over the guardrail, down an embankment, and causing one death and four serious injuries. The new law will help prevent serious collisions and offenders.

“Inevitably, there will still be accidents when someone gets distracted or during inclement weather, amongst other things,” said Faxon. “Individuals and their families do have rights when they are the victim of a serious collision and need help with their medical bills, and deserve to seek a remedy for their pain and suffering.”
