Washington, D.C. (Law Firm Newswire) January 22, 2013 – The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled infant recliners due to infant deaths.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced a voluntary recall of 150,000 infant recliners under the brand name Nap Nanny. According to the CPSC, five infants have died while in the products, and dozens more have nearly fallen out.

Reached for comment, Washington, D.C. personal injury attorney David Lietz said, “Given the number of incidents reported with this product, it is good to see them being recalled. Consumer safety should be paramount for manufacturers, and that goes double for manufacturers of baby products.”

The CPSC released a statement saying that four U.S. retailers – Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Babies R Us – agreed to recall the products and that the manufacturer, Baby Matters, LLC, was unwilling or unable to do so.

The company is out of business, according to its founder, Leslie Gudel. The company’s website has a statement from Gudel saying the CPSC complaint is without merit and the Nap Nanny products are safe if used properly.

The current recall applies to all models of Nap Nanny recliners: Generation One, Generation Two, and Chill.

Generation One recliners were previously recalled in July, 2010 following the first reported death in the product and 22 reports of babies falling out of the Nap Nanny or hanging from them, despite the infant being secured by a harness in most of those cases. Baby Matters participated in that recall.

Sales of Generation One and Two products totaled about 55,000 between 2009 and 2012, when they were discontinued. About 100,000 Chill models were purchased since early 2011.

“The death of an infant is an unparalleled tragedy,” added David Lietz. “Anyone whose child may have been injured or killed by an unsafe product should contact an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible.”

All four participating retailers are offering refunds on Nap Nanny recliners purchased from them.
