Hazing Ritual Involving Drinking Kills 19-Year-Old Student

In this scenario, a young 19-year-old student, wanting to be a part of the milieu and fit in on campus, took part in the annual hazing ritual at his fraternity house. It was a typical rabble rousing production, with hard drinking the main component.

“The idea of this particular ritual was to go from room to room in the frat house, answer various questions, and then drink what was handed to them. A lot of booze went down in a two hour period, and most of the pledges were totally drunk. However, one pledge, found the next morning, was not hung over, as the rest of them were. He was dead,” Munroe said. The autopsy indicated the young man had died of cardiac arrhythmia, triggered by the fact that he had consumed five times the legal limit of alcohol.

The police investigation uncovered the fact that the ritual that took place that night was not sanctioned, in that it was not registered with the university or the Pi Kappa Alpha national chapter. Close to two dozen fraternity members face either felony hazing charges or misdemeanor hazing charges, and a further 31 students have been cited for being in violation of the university’s code of conduct, which could get them reprimanded or expelled.

The 19-year-old’s parents chose to file a wrongful death lawsuit to make the point that alcohol poisoning takes too many young lives and hazing rituals, as a method of initiation, must stop.
