Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) March 19, 2013 – The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) has designated March 2013 as Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The organization is working for equal access to proper care for the 1.7 million Americans who experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year.

“Millions of people have been affected by different types of brain injuries, from traumatic brain injury caused by physical impact to lack of oxygen to the brain as a result of medical malpractice,” said Chicago brain injury attorney Robert Briskman. “Fortunately these injuries are being studied more intensively which will hopefully reduce the number of people afflicted with traumatic brain injuries.”

According to BIAA, traumatic brain injury is a factor in more than 30 percent of all injury-related fatalities in the country. Approximately 75 percent of TBIs that happen each year are actually forms of mild TBI, such as concussions. The common causes of TBIs include injury from a fall, an automobile accident, a workplace injury, or an injury sustained during an assault.

Each year, it is estimated that more than 52,000 people die as a result of TBI and more than 275,000 people are hospitalized. Another estimated 1.365 million people are treated and released from an emergency room.

The dangers of brain injuries and brain-injury-related disease have received national attention in recent years, as a group of more than 2,000 National Football League (NFL) players has launched a lawsuit against the football league, seeking compensation for neurological conditions, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

The players allege that these conditions are the result of concussions they suffered while playing football. In addition, many U.S. armed service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions due to explosions and other combat conditions.

When a brain injury is caused by the negligence of another person or entity, the injured person may be able to gain compensation for medical costs, pain and suffering and loss of income by filing a lawsuit against the negligent party.
