Tampa Veterans Attorney David Magann Comments on Community Heroes

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) August 28, 2013 – The group Disabled American Veterans (DAV) recently awarded the Community Hero award to two distinguished Florida residents.

“So much of what Disabled American Veterans does for returning vets and their families really hinges on the efforts of the larger community,” said Tampa veterans attorney David W. Magann. “Their efforts do not go unnoticed.”

In a ceremony in St. Petersburg, the award was given to Florida resident Keith Collins, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War. Collins, who lives in New Tampa, is a home builder and is CEO and president of his company, Tampa Residential. Collins oversees “Freedom House,” incorporating universal design principals to construct affordable homes for wounded vets.

According to Collins, in his 18 years of working with other home builders, approximately 2,300 Freedom Homes, designed to accommodate vets and others who have special needs, have been constructed throughout the U.S. Collins says that his goal is to create a comfortable home rather than a “clinical setting” to allow disabled vets to have the independence they deserve.

Collins said that though the real estate business is based on large profit margins, his focus is on homes that can be purchased and maintained, including utility costs, more affordably. He has lobbied for state and federal legislation which would improve living conditions for veterans across the country, and says that he dedicates approximately 50 percent of his time talking to vets. He works to find homes for homeless vets and others, especially homeless families. The national service officer supervisor with the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Andy Marshall, stated that Collins had given a great deal to his community, a focus of the award.

Another Marine Corps vet and Florida resident, Tom Howell, was recognized as a Community Hero for his service to vets and their family members. A vet of Somalia and Operation Iraqi Freedom, among others, Howell joined Disabled American Veterans after returning to civilian life.

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) was founded in 1920. The association endeavours to empower vets to lead lives with respect, dignity and high quality. They work to ensure that veterans and their loved ones get access to the full range of benefits to which they are entitled. They have established the Disabled American Veterans Community of Heroes Week to increase public awareness of the literally thousands of volunteers, as well as legislators, non-profits, other organizations and companies who help veterans transition back to civilian life.
