Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) September 24, 2013 – Seven people were injured in an auto accident near Tampa, Fla. involving 11 vehicles.

The collision occurred around noon on a recent Saturday on southbound Interstate 75 just north of State Road 60. Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) say an out-of-state driver caused the pileup by cutting off a semi truck while changing lanes. Tampa auto accident attorney Robert Joyce says it should serve as a reminder to drive defensively.

“Anyone on the road is a potential danger,” Joyce said. “People unfamiliar with the area might have trouble navigating the roads. Drunk driving is far too common. And none of us is immune to distraction or is capable of perfect safety at all times. That’s why it’s everyone’s responsibility to practice defensive driving and stay alert.”

The multi-vehicle chain reaction began when William Morton-Holcomb, of Peoria, Ariz., collided with a semi truck while changing lanes, according to the FHP. The truck then collided with an SUV, pinning it against a concrete barrier on the right edge of the roadway. In the following moments, eight more vehicles became entangled in the pileup. Morton-Holcomb was cited for improperly changing lanes.

Dozens of eyewitnesses rushed to help the victims, many of whom were trapped in their vehicles. In all, seven people were taken to the hospital, according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue. Two people – James Lee of Seffner, Fla., and Jeffery Brooks of Pa. – were listed in critical but stable condition. Brooks was trapped in his SUV for an hour before firefighters were able to free him. A helicopter took him to Tampa General Hospital. Lee and his three passengers – Norma Lee, 65, Cathy Lee, 43, and Donna Lee, 23, all from Seffner – were taken to Tampa General Hospital. Donna Lee and Norma Lee were listed in serious condition. Cathy Lee was reported to have minor injuries.

“Fortunately for everyone involved, this crash did not result in any fatalities,” Joyce observed. “But injuries and emotional trauma from an auto accident can last a lifetime. I would advise anyone hurt in a car accident that they believe was the fault of another, to consult with an experienced personal injury attorney right away.”
