New episodes of the Special Needs Law Podcast are now available.

The series is hosted by Bernard A. Krooks, a nationally prominent attorney in special needs planning and elder law and a founding partner of Littman Krooks LLP. The Special Needs Law Podcast features interviews and talks by leaders in the disability community on issues of importance to individuals with special needs and their families.

In a recent episode of the podcast, Mr. Krooks interviewed David Kot, the founder and scriptwriter for Autism at Face Value, which publishes Face Value Comics, the first comic book to feature a family-friendly hero with autism.

“We wanted this to be done because we believe that all kids need heroes like themselves,” said Kot. Kot said that the comic book would help children with autism understand how emotions are expressed through facial expressions — by focusing on the feelings that characters are expressing and what happened in the story to make them feel that way. Kot said that readers who do not have autism would also benefit from reading Face Value Comics. “We want to teach and build empathy for all our readers, not just the autistic audience,” he said.

Other episodes of the podcast have included guest speaker Leslie Josel, founder of Order Out of Chaos, on the topic of “Exceptional Organizing: Strategies for Special Needs Clients and Their Families,” and guest speaker Marissa Hacker, founder of Fantastic Friends, on “The Importance of Social Inclusion While Being a Sibling Advocate.”

The Special Needs Law Podcast is available free at this location.

Bernard A. Krooks is President of the Board of Directors of The Arc of Westchester and a past president of the Special Needs Alliance.
