Veterans Disability Lawyer Applauds Publication of Legal Guides for Michigan Veterans

Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) September 3, 2014 – The Office of the Michigan Attorney General has published two new legal guides designed to help Michigan servicemembers, veterans and their families.

The first guide, the “Michigan Military and Veterans Legal Service Guide,” provides a comprehensive listing of legal resources to help Michigan veterans access benefits and protections in a range of areas including healthcare, education, employment and housing.

The second guide, “The Michigan Guide to Military Family Law,” focuses specifically on explaining the rights of military families when facing issues in civilian family court.

According to the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, these publications are the latest in a series of efforts from Governor Rick Snyder to increase the number of Michigan veterans who access federal benefits.

“I’ve seen erroneous rejections, outrageous wait lists — veterans on their own often give up hope. ” remarked Jim Fausone, a veterans disability lawyer. “Hopefully, these guides can connect Michigan veterans with the professionals and programs that can make real headway.”

Michigan is home to more than half a million veterans, and government officials expect Michigan’s veteran population to increase by 8,000 over the next few years. The Obama Administration recently pledged $16 billion nationally for veterans benefits, but such measures are pointless if veterans cannot access them.

“It’s a moral imperative that we in Michigan start getting this right,” said Fausone. “It’s unconscionable that so many of our veterans are stranded, struggling to reach for benefits and protections simply because the system is too difficult to navigate.”
