Orange County, CA (Law Firm Newswire) November 14, 2014 – A recent study, published in the Journal of Divorce and Remarriage, has found that divorcing parents definitively benefit from taking a co-parenting course.

Significant research has already shown the wide range of short- and long-term benefits for children when their separated parents learn to co-parent. This is one of the first studies that focuses on the effects on the parents.

The study focused on a series of online co-parenting courses by Online Parenting Programs, a company that offers a wide range of court-approved programs for couples and families experiencing divorce and change. The classes can be completed online in as little as four hours.

“These classes do focus on the children, but along they way, they impart some very important skills to parents,” commented Gerald Maggio, a divorce mediator. “Learning how to manage conflict calmly but confidently, becoming a more flexible thinker — these are things that can help adults be not only better parents, but better coworkers and better family members as well.”

The most significant benefit that researchers found was improved communication between parents and children. The study also found that many parents felt more confident about their ability to co-parent successfully.

For children, the benefits of co-parenting include increased emotional well-being, social adjustment and educational achievement. Because of the scientific consensus on these benefits, many states require all divorcing couples with children to complete a co-parenting course.
