San Francisco, CA (Law Firm Newswire) September 28, 2015 – In San Diego, California, attorney Michael Gilfix presented a program on Preventing Elder Financial Abuse on July 16 at a national Symposium. It was the annual conference of Wealth Counsel, a leading estate planning organization that is nationally known and respected.

His session was titled “Our Population is Aging: Is Your Practice Prepared?” It addressed two crucial areas. The first part of the program was about marketing to the Boomer population. In the second part, Gilfix spoke about how to give the Boomer population what they want — independence and control — while preventing elder abuse at the same time.

Rather than focusing on litigation, court involvement and other reactions to abuse after it has taken place, he placed emphasis on avoiding financial abuse. Financial abuse can afflict anyone at any time, and 50 percent of financial abusers tend to be family members.

“As individuals age, they become more vulnerable to exploitation. Financial strain, illness and decreased cognitive ability are among the major factors that can put elders at the risk of abuse,” said Gilfix. “There are a number of common warning signs that may indicate that someone is a victim of financial elder abuse, such as unusual spending patterns, missing property or unexplained bank account withdrawals.”

Gilfix & La Poll Associates, a law firm based in Palo Alto, California, is experienced in addressing financial abuse prevention, along with being consistently successful in recovering assets for victims of financial abuse.
