Florida Car Accident Attorney Jason Chalik Comments on Increase in Pedestrian Fatalities

Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) April 8, 2016 – There has been an alarming increase in pedestrian deaths from car accidents across the United States, and Florida is estimated to have the highest rate of such deaths in the nation, according to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Based on preliminary data, the safety association estimates a 10 percent increase from 2014 to 2015 in the number of pedestrians killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide. Florida is estimated to have the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities in the country.

“Pedestrians are extremely vulnerable in car accidents, and collisions often result in death,” said Jason Chalik, a Florida car accident attorney with Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers. “Unfortunately, driver negligence is often to blame.”

The estimated 10 percent increase in pedestrian deaths from 2014 to 2015 comes after the number of pedestrian fatalities had already increased by 19 percent over the previous five years. During that time period, from 2009 to 2014, the number of total traffic fatalities actually dropped by approximately 4 percent. The proportion of pedestrian fatalities to total roadway deaths has reached 15 percent, the highest rate in 25 years, the safety association said.

Florida, California, Texas and New York accounted for 42 percent of all pedestrian fatalities. That in itself is not surprising, as those states have large populations. However, Florida is also estimated to have the highest rate of pedestrian deaths. In 2014, the most recent year for which complete information was available, Florida had 2.96 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 population, the second-highest rate in the country, after New Mexico, and nearly double the U.S. average rate of 1.53 per 100,000.

Preliminary statistics from the first half of 2015 show a 4 percent decrease in Florida’s pedestrian deaths, but there were still 273 such fatalities during that time period, and the estimated half-year rate of 1.35 on-foot fatalities for January through June of 2015 was the highest in the United States.
