Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) May 3, 2016 – A 22-year-old Austin resident ran over a child carrier being towed behind a bicycle. He walked away from the scene after getting out of his vehicle.

Police eventually identified William Covington as the driver of a black Jeep that ran over two children in a child carrier on Wheless Lane, finding him a few days later. The carrier was pinned underneath the vehicle with a five-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy trapped in it.

Both children were taken to hospital. The girl had facial injuries, bruising over a substantial portion of her body and two broken teeth. The little boy had two broken arms.

Eyewitnesses to the accident said the driver got out of his vehicle and ran over to a bystander and said he had hit the children. He then walked away from the confusion as first responders and other emergency personnel arrived. The Jeep’s owner, who alerted police that he had loaned Covington his vehicle about 20-minutes prior to the accident, spotted the vehicle on a media report.

The call from the Jeep’s owner and a surveillance tape from a nearby camera assisted police in apprehending Covington. After his picture was released to the media, police received several tips on where to find him. It appears that Covington has prior misdemeanor convictions for driving with a revoked or suspended license, and three possession marijuana charges. The Jeep’s owner, who was not involved in the accident, admitted to police that he and Covington were involved in drugs.

“This horrendous accident could have been worse, but it was bad enough as it was,” said Bobby Lee, an Austin injury attorney, who is not involved in this case. The parent towing the two children would most likely want to file a personal injury lawsuit against Covington and based on the evidence, they would likely win their case in civil court. A civil trial would take place after the criminal trial in this instance.

“If you have been in an accident like this, reach out and connect with an experienced personal injury attorney. Case details are thoroughly examined and your legal rights explained in great detail. If negligence is present and the cause of your accident, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries,” said Lee.
