Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) May 11, 2016 – A recent series of wrong-way car accidents in Florida has prompted calls for improved safety.

Just before the New Year, five people died in Miami-Dade when a drunk driver speeding the wrong way on I-95 struck a vehicle carrying four people. In February, a 26-year-old died traveling north in the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike. In March, a Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputy died when a wrong-way driver collided with his squad car, and a deadly wrong-way crash occurred on I-4 in Orange County.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that impaired driving is one of the primary causes of wrong-way crashes, but they can also occur as a result of suicide attempts, or of older drivers becoming confused or not being able to see properly. Safety advocates also say that better signage and barriers are needed, especially on highway off-ramps where drivers may try to enter.

Many Florida highways have only a red “Wrong Way” sign to alert drivers that they are traveling in the wrong direction. Experts have suggested that safety would be improved by flashing LED signs or spike strips that puncture tires if vehicles attempt to travel the wrong way.
