Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) June 17, 2016 – Vaginal mesh implants are not just an issue in the United States. A well-respected Italian surgeon speaks out about the dangers posed by the implants. He says surgeons are not properly trained to perform such surgery correctly.

It was twelve years ago when Italian Professor Stefano Salvatore spoke out against using polypropylene in gynaecological surgery. It was a serious problem then and remains so today. Salvatore chose to speak out once again to address the shockingly high risk of using bladder slings in England is actually 8.56 percent and not 3 percent as the government indicated in its most recent figures.

The large differential in statistics was mentioned at a conference where Salvatore was presenting a speech. He was asked if surgeons were in compliance with current certifications for vaginal mesh operations. As it turned out, there are no mandatory requirements that surgeons must follow. It was even discovered that the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) posted a notice on its website asking surgeons to ensure they are up to date with training regarding implanting surgical mesh slings and if they encountered any problems to report them.

Although Professor Salvatore recognizes the usefulness of slings, he insists there is no ideal material yet and that there is no certification for surgeons performing the implantation surgery. How is this relevant to surgical mesh implant surgery in the U.S.? U.S. surgeons are not certified to perform such surgeries. Additionally, in using the current polypropylene material, mesh recipients experience pain on intercourse, spontaneous pain, exposure, infections, erosion, mesh shrinkage and painful intimacy for sexual partners.

“Aside from the significant downside to the current harmful vaginal mesh implants, it appears there are new developments on the horizon that point to the use of safer alternatives to address pelvic organ prolapse. Those new techniques may include remodelling using collegen or stem cells and/or using regenerative medicine to stimulate tissue growth,” said Austin vaginal mesh implant attorney Bobby Lee.
