Immigrant Numbers Rising Steadily but No Sign of Immigration Reform

Houston, TX (Law Firm Newswire) July 1, 2016 – Since 2014, over 3 million new immigrants have settled in the United States.

According to a report released by the Center for Immigration Studies, 3.1 million immigrants have moved to the United States since 2014. Over 1.1 million are illegal or undocumented immigrants. The overall figures break out to show that 550,000 such immigrants entered in 2014 and in 2015, a figure much higher than the last recorded immigration surge in 2012 and 2013 during which 350,000 entered each year.

Despite suggestion by the media that the greatest flow of immigrants comes from Mexico, in fact, the bulk of immigrants are arriving from South and East Asia. Mexican immigration to the United States has actually decreased from 840,000 to 338,000 — a steady decrease in numbers since 2001.

“The 3.1 million immigrants that have come to settle in the United States is the highest number of immigrants arriving within our borders since 2000-2001,” commented respected Houston immigration attorney, Annie Banerjee. “They have effectively offset the reduction in immigrants from Mexico.”

The significant increase in the number of new immigrants, legal and illegal, represents a 39 percent hike over the last two years and includes immigrants from the Middle East (up to 203,000) and South Asia (up to 550,000).

Increased Immigration Numbers — The Causes

A number of factors have led to the dramatic increase in immigration numbers: an improved economy; a flexible, yet badly broken immigration system; and a reduction in the numbers of law enforcement personnel.

Regardless of the reasons for the significant increase in legal and illegal immigration, there is one overarching factor that makes this large influx problematic — the lack of immigration reform. What exists now is what has existed for decades and it is a system that once worked fairly effectively, but no longer does. Immigration reform is like an ouroboros, a dragon/serpent eating its own tail.

The complete circle of the serpent eating its tail is a fitting symbol of the mass confusion surrounding immigration reform as well as the politicians running around in circles trying to deal with the issue. The end result is that nothing effective has been done, and it looks as though nothing effective will be done about immigration reform before the presidential election.

Immigration is a problem that is not going to go away overnight, and the U.S. immigration system cannot be simply tweaked to run to its maximum potential. There is far too much water under the bridge to find a viable solution for all that way. “What does the future hold for immigration reform? It appears there is no answer to that question and we need to see what happens after the election,” said Banerjee. “Immigration reform is a major conundrum that no one really knows how to handle.”
