Speeding Trucker Kills Two in El Paso

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) July 14, 2016 – The semi truck in an accident near El Paso rear-ended a car, killing two women.

According to the police accident report, a big rig driver was speeding and did not reduce the speed of his truck when the traffic ahead of him slowed down. Subsequently he rammed into the car in front of him. The car was literally run over and was under the truck in crumpled, fiery ball when emergency first responders arrived at the scene at I-10 East and Sunland Park, El Paso.

Six other cars, SUVs and pickup trucks were also involved in this accident but people in those vehicles managed to escape with non life-threatening injuries.

The 36 firefighters and 15 fire trucks could do little to salvage the car, or its occupants, as it was completely ablaze. It took over an hour of battling the flames to put the fire out. The highway was shut down for almost 19 hours while crews worked to clean up after the horrific crash. The semi truck remained where it came to rest for hours after the initial investigation was finished — its cargo still smouldering.

Accidents like this are far too common on many Texas highways and byways. The increases in construction and oil and gas company activities in the state have resulted in a significant hike in the number of big rigs travelling the roads.

“If that isn’t bad enough, many long haul truckers have tight deadlines to meet and are driving on little to no sleep. It’s a persistent problem with the trucking industry — companies demand their drivers meet stringent deadlines, while drivers cut corners to make it to their destinations on time,” said Bobby Lee, an Austin trucking accident attorney, not involved in this case.

The trucking industry is heavily regulated, however the rules and regulations seem to be more honored in the breach than in the observance, hence the higher number of horrific accidents on Texas highways. “It isn’t solely a Texas problem though,” added Lee. “This happens in just about any state because the trucking industry as a whole wants what it wants — cargo on time no matter what it takes to get it there.” Clearly, lost time with a rig that is behind schedule means the trucking company loses money and so does the trucker.
