Redavid Law Endorses Amendment 2 Legalizing Medical Marijuana in Florida

Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) October 27, 2016 – Miami criminal defense attorney Jordan Redavid is the latest in a growing list of endorsements for Florida’s Amendment 2, which would legalize medical marijuana.

Redavid said his reasons for supporting the proposed amendment to Florida’s constitution stemmed both from compassion and from pragmatism.

“It’s clear that marijuana’s benefits for patients with certain medical conditions are unmatched by conventional drugs and other treatments,” Redavid said. “People with cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and other debilitating ailments find relief from pain and a restored appetite by using marijuana. Every day, Florida cops arrest people who are using marijuana in private for relief from sickness. I find that unconscionable.”

Redavid also pointed out the financial and legal costs of marijuana prohibition.

“Not only do we spend a great deal of taxpayers’ money arresting, prosecuting, and incarcerating marijuana users, but by doing so, we divert police and prosecutors away from real crimes of violence and theft. Our prisons are overcrowded, our courts are backed up, our police are overworked, and we’re spending these limited resources on punishing sick people? Even if you don’t believe marijuana is medicine, it’s hard to see the logic in this.”

The amendment is Florida voters’ second chance at legalizing medical marijuana. The first came in 2014, when a similar amendment received over 57 percent of the vote. Florida law requires a 60 percent supermajority in order for voters to amend the state constitution. As opinions nationwide continue to trend in favor of both medical and recreational marijuana, polls on Amendment 2 have consistently shown the measure is likely to pass.

The list of states with some form of medical marijuana law has grown to 25, plus the District of Columbia, since California became the first in 1996. At least 10 states will vote on legalizing either medical or recreational marijuana on November 8.
