Shot in Head with Air Rifle, Patient’s Surgery Delayed

Southfield, MI (Law Firm Newswire) January 3, 2017 - A California woman went to an emergency room after she had been shot in the head with an air rifle. A delay in treatment resulted in a traumatic brain injury.

The woman waited for five hours and by the time she was transferred to another hospital for surgery, she was barely conscious. Attending doctors at the second hospital rushed her into surgery, but the intracranial bleeding had exerted so much pressure on her brain that she sustained a traumatic brain injury. She now requires around-the-clock care.

The plaintiff’s family filed a medical negligence lawsuit and were subsequently awarded $12 million. During the trial, expert witnesses testified that had she been operated on earlier, her outcome would not have been as severe.
