Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) August 1, 2018 – The family of a man who died after a car crash have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against tennis superstar Venus Williams, the other driver involved in the accident.

“As with any wrongful death lawsuit, if the defendant was negligent and that negligence caused the death, then the family should be entitled to compensation,” said Robert Joyce, a Tampa car accident attorney with Joyce & Reyes, who is not involved in the case.

The accident took place June 9 near Williams’ Palm Beach Gardens, Florida neighborhood, when Williams’ Toyota SUV was struck by a Hyundai Accent driven by Linda Barson, 68. The crash caused severe injuries to Barson’s passenger, Jerome Barson, 78, who died two weeks after the accident. Linda Barson suffered a broken wrist and cracked sternum. Williams was not injured.

Palm Beach Gardens police originally released a statement declaring Williams at fault in the accident, as it appeared that she was in an intersection under a red light when she was struck by Barson, who had a green light. However, surveillance footage was later located indicating that Williams entered the intersection under a green light, but slowed when her path was blocked by a Nissan Altima that had turned in front of her.

A new police report released July 7 stated that Williams entered the intersection lawfully, stopped advancing through the intersection in order to avoid a collision with the Altima, and then started to proceed through the intersection in accordance with the law. A Palm Beach Gardens police spokesman said that authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.
