Chicago Police Charge Lyft Driver with DUI in Fatal Car Accident

Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) November 29, 2018 – Two drivers were charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a woman’s death in a two-vehicle collision in Chicago, Illinois. One of the drivers worked for the ridesharing company Lyft.

Chicago police charged Lyft driver Elizabeth Renter with one misdemeanor count of drug DUI after her passenger died in a head-on crash. They also charged Travis Anderson, 25, of Arizona, with misdemeanor counts of alcohol and drug DUI as well as one felony count of aggravated DUI resulting in death in the fatal crash.

“Drivers have a responsibility to keep their passengers safe on the road,” said Paul Greenberg, a Chicago car accident attorney not involved in the case. “DUI endangers the lives of everyone on the road. Individuals who have been injured in a car accident caused by a Lyft driver should contact a lawyer as soon as possible as they may be entitled to compensation.”

Renter, 32, was driving a Toyota Camry that was carrying a passenger identified as Anudari Bayaraa, 23. Anderson’s Toyota Avalon crossed the center line and hit Renter’s vehicle head-on, according to authorities.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office stated that Bayaraa died from her injuries after being transported to Stroger Hospital. A 31-year-old man who was accompanying Bayaraa in the Lyft vehicle was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Renter was hospitalized with serious injuries. The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accidents Unit is investigating the fatal crash.

Lyft issued a statement following Bayaraa’s death in the car accident. “We are deeply saddened and shocked by this incident,” the rideshare company said. “Immediately upon hearing these allegations, we deactivated the driver … We stand ready to assist law enforcement in any investigation.”
