Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) October 29, 2019 – Study shows that automobile crashes caused by distracted driving are more severe.

A study conducted by the Risk Institute at Ohio State University found that when a distracted driver causes an automobile accident, the collision tends to be more severe and causes more serious injuries and death as compared to crashes that are caused by other means. The study demonstrated that distracted driving accidents are the most severe and cause the most damage and injury when they occur as rear-end collisions or in work zones and on interstate highways.

The study found that road design may have a part to play in why these crashes so severe. Roads with roundabouts and rotaries, researchers found, had less distracted driving accidents. The roundabouts and rotaries may force drivers to pay more attention.

In a recent accident, near Miami, Florida, an allegedly distracted driver struck a group of bicyclists, killing one of them and injuring six. Reportedly the driver was distracted with something in her car, which caused her to run into the group of cyclists.

Tampa attorney, Robert T. Joyce, Esq. stated, “Distracted driving accidents have become a national epidemic. The Tampa area has seen a significant increase in car crash litigation.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that about nine percent of all fatal crashes in 2016 were the result of distracted driving. The Ohio State study looked at police data, including 1.4 million records, from 2013 to 2017. During that period, the number of distracted-driving-related crashes increased in Ohio, just as it did nationwide. The study determined that in-vehicle distractions cause 48 percent of accidents and that younger drivers ages 20 to 24 caused the highest percentage of crashes.
