Peter Brill Obtains Acquittal for NYPD Cop Accused of Sexual Abuse

New York criminal defense attorney Peter Brill represented a former NYPD officer who was accused of having multiple sexual encounters with a 15-year-old prostitute and videotaping them on at least five occasions between January 2017 and April 2017. The jury found Raul Olmeda, 41, not guilty of having sex with a minor. Olmeda was also acquitted of felony rape, using a child in a sexual performance and child endangerment.

Olmeda was convicted of official misconduct and witness tampering for encouraging the teenager not to testify at his trial, both of which are misdemeanor offenses. The ex-NYPD officer was accused of gaining access to departmental computers to find out what evidence investigators had gathered against him.

Olmeda is facing up to one year in jail. If he had been convicted of the top charge of sexually motivated felony, he could have been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Brill obtained the acquittal for his client despite the prosecution’s attempts to establish a pattern of behavior using evidence such as images and videos. They claimed the former officer paid the teen and other women for sex and videotaped their sexual acts. Investigators alleged the encounters took place in Olmeda’s apartment.

Olmeda had been a police officer for about four years when NYPD Police Commissioner James O’Neill fired him in March 2018 following a department trial.
