Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) April 15, 2020 – A 31-year-old male driver was arrested after causing a car accident on Interstate-75 that resulted in a woman’s death. He was charged with DUI manslaughter for being under the influence of drugs and driving with a suspended or revoked license involving death.

Authorities said the driver, Jeremy Guerrero, had methamphetamines in his system at the time of the crash in Hillsborough County, Florida. He was booked into Hillsborough County Jail.

“Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol puts the lives of everyone on the road in danger,” commented Robert Joyce, a Tampa personal injury attorney with Joyce & Reyes, who is not involved with the case. “Far too many accidents occur on Tampa’s major roadways, including I-75. Anyone who has been injured in a car accident should speak to an experienced attorney about pursing compensation and holding the negligent driver accountable.”

Guerrero was behind the wheel of a 2017 Toyota Corolla. He was heading south on I-75 just past County Road 672 when he came across a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office patrol car that was traveling ahead of him in the same direction. Troopers said Guerrero was driving at a high speed and braked hard to avoid passing the patrol vehicle. He rapidly slowed down and moved from the inside southbound lane to the outside one.

Florida Highway Patrol said Guerrero lost control of his car in the process. He hit the left side of a 2009 Dodge van, causing both vehicles to veer off the interstate. The van driver was identified as 57-year-old Maria DeLourdes Perez.

The Corolla overturned and hit some trees along I-75. The Dodge had a head-on collision with a tree. DeLourdes Perez was pronounced dead after being transported to Blake Medical Center for treatment. Authorities said she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

Guerrero and his 31-year-old passenger were not wearing their seat belts when the crash occurred. They sustained minor injuries and but were not treated at a hospital.
