The Possibility of Additional Stimulus Payments for People With Disabilities

Of course, for older Americans and many who live with a serious disability, the health risks posed by the coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it is also known, is a significant concern. However, everyone has been impacted; not just by the virus itself but also by the government’s response to slow the spread of the virus. 

To help combat the negative economic effects that everyday people are experiencing as a result of the pandemic, the federal government announced a stimulus bill that provides up to $1,200 per person and an additional $500 per dependent child under the age of 17. However, most families received this payment weeks ago, and the federal government is discussing the possibility of issuing a second round of stimulus check. 

According to a recent news report, the United States House of Representatives approved a second round of stimulus checks in a $3 trillion relief bill called the Heroes Act. The newly proposed legislation would provide an additional $1,200 per person, on top of the previous stimulus payment. Most analysts agree that the bill, as it is currently written, is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate. However, lawmakers have been in discussions regarding the details, and many seem to agree that additional stimulus is necessary for individuals and families still suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In addition to the second-round stimulus checks, the Heroes Act provides an estimated $10 to $15 billion in federal funding to states to help pay for Medicaid home-based and community-based services for a full year, starting in July. This funding could be used by states to cover expenses related to anyone with a disability who qualifies for assistance. 

Importantly, the Heroes Act would also provide $500 retroactively to adults with disabilities who are claimed as dependents. Under the initial stimulus bill, these individuals did not qualify for any payment.
