Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) September 23, 2020 – Caring for the nation’s veterans is one of the country’s most undeniable duties. After serving their country, a veteran deserves to know that they will be cared for, should the need arise. Most often, however, it is family members who step up to care for wounded, injured or ill veterans. Indeed, according to the Veterans Administration (VA) Secretary, Robert Wilkie, “caregivers charged with caring for our nation’s Veterans face new challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic” in that they have become increasingly isolated and cannot obtain reliable, outside help.

To help caregivers, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation partnered with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to launch a new program that will offer family caregivers access to no-cost, short-term aid to help them care for wounded, ill or injured Veterans or service members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new program, called Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers, qualifying caregivers can apply to receive up to 24-hours of respite care to help with specific caregiving tasks. Initially, the program will only be available in a few states, including Florida, California and Texas. The eligibility requirements for the program are:

* The applicant must be a caregiver to a wounded, ill or injured veteran and have proof of their family member’s service;
* The applicant must live in a qualifying area; and
* The assistance must be in relation to a qualifying area of assistance, including cooking, bathing, grooming, light housekeeping, exercising, companionship, medical/medication reminders, mobility assistance, transportation and other activities.

If a caregiver is selected for the program, they will receive 24 hours of service from a professional caregiver. These 24 hours can be used over the course of a few days, a week, a month, or longer. However, the time must be used in four-hour increments. All hours must be used by December 31, 2020.
