Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) June 11, 2021 – Most service members are aware of the substantial benefits offered by the Veterans Administration. However, what fewer people know is that there are also some benefits available for dependents of service members and surviving children of veterans.

The United States government allows certain family members to take advantage of their loved one’s military service. While these benefits are not as broad as those enjoyed by service members themselves, they are still substantial. However, the lack of knowledge surrounding dependent and survivor benefits has historically meant that far fewer people apply for benefits than are eligible to receive them.

A few of the most important VA benefits available to dependents and survivors include life insurance benefits, education benefits healthcare.

Life Insurance Benefits

Dependent children of service members who are on active duty can qualify for coverage under Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI). However, to qualify for FSGLI benefits, the service member must be covered under a corresponding Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) policy. The program also extends to members of the Ready Reserve or National Guard who are covered under an SGLI policy. Qualifying dependents can obtain free life insurance coverage, up to $10,000 per dependent child.

Education Benefits

There are several different types of education benefits available for dependent children of service members. For instance, the Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits that can be used for either education or job training. Dependents who are already receiving benefits that were transferred by an eligible Veteran or service member may qualify.

Older children between the ages of 18 and 26 may qualify for education benefits through the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Education and Assistance (DEA) Program. DEA benefits provide monthly payments that can be used to cover a broad range of education and job-related coursework.

Healthcare Coverage

Healthcare is a significant expense for many families. However, dependent children of active service members can qualify for the TRICARE program, which offers comprehensive healthcare coverage. Additionally, dependent children or survivors of veterans who died in the line of duty who are experiencing disability may qualify for health insurance coverage through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). While CHAMPVA does not necessarily cover all the costs of health insurance, it does help defray the high costs of coverage.
