Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire)July 20, 2021 – Sustaining a head injury in a car accident is not dissimilar to receiving a head injury while deployed overseas or playing sports. The symptoms of brain injuries are common but affect each person differently. Recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is difficult, frustrating and painstakingly slow. The good news is there is another form of assistance available, brain glasses.

Recently, a woman was rear-ended by another vehicle, causing the woman’s car to crash into the car in front of her. The woman’s head hit the steering wheel and snapped back. She was told she would recover quickly but still had debilitating side effects weeks after the crash. The woman could not do math, could not spell, lost her balance frequently and skipped words. In her own words, she had lost her personality. Brain glasses helped her recover.

The woman met with an optometrist, Deborah Zelinsky, the founder of Mind-Eye Institute in Northbrook, Illinois. Thanks to more than three decades of research into the connections between the retina and brain, Dr. Zelinsky explains that the retina is made from brain tissue and sends signals beyond just seeing. The brain glasses she developed do not correct eyesight. “They balance the processing of central and peripheral eyesight, synchronizing the integration between retinal sensory and auditory sensory systems. The glasses alter the way people listen,” Zelinsky explained.

Brain glasses, trademarked as Brainwear, are not a mainstream treatment. However, Zelinsky’s office sees patients from all over the world. Her work centers on bridging the gap between eye care and neuroscience. Zelinsky’s clinic has worked with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), children with learning problems and people on the autism spectrum.

“Accident victims with TBI may now have another avenue to get their lives back in order,” said Brooks Schuelke, an Austin brain injury attorney. “The way science is progressing, there may be even more positive solutions to dealing with the aftermath of a brain injury.”
