The notion that press releases have to be stale announcement-oriented features is not always true. In fact, real news far out performs press releases.

Recently, Law Firm Newswire did an internal review of press releases submitted in May and June of this year. They looked at different styles, different regions, various practice areas, and topics to determine what makes some press releases do so much better than others. The answer was not surprising. People would rather read news than self serving press releases.

In one news release, the law firm focused on a federal law that is going to have a significant effect on its clients. The feature discussed some of the changes and ended with information related to an event that people could attend to hear the attorney talk more about the new law. This headline was syndicated 62,000 times as of Monday, June 27, 2011.

Another news release followed a traditional formula, which announced an event but did not offer much insight into the topic, spending much of the release just discussing credentials. This headline was syndicated 750 times.

The report showed a consistent disparity in the thousands between headline syndications of traditional press releases and features written with a journalistic tone offering news relevant commentary.

It is safe to say that the most popular news release is one filled with news.
